Christiane, the Samba Queen and the heart and soul of Brazil in LA.

“La Samba Queen” Christiane Callil is the heart and soul of Brazil in Los Angeles.  In her dynamic, widely praised programs with her Brazilian dance revue, “The Girls From Ipanema,” she has indeed proven herself to be Los Angeles’ reigning monarch of Samba - that most sensual of all Brazilian dances.

But Callil is more than a Brazilian dancer, more than a singer, more than a choreographer. She is the artistic spirit of a nation – a hip, contemporary Carmen Miranda of this generation.  “Every time I perform,” says Callil, “I can feel Carmen’s spirit surging and singing inside of me.”

The city of Los Angeles - who clearly loves Samba and Brazilian Dance - obviously agrees.  When a corner of Hollywood Boulevard was named after Carmen Miranda, it was Christiane who was asked to sing and dance the Samba in memory of the legendary Brazilian artist,  bringing tears to the eyes of some of the bystanders who recalled the spirit, energetic singing and dancing of Carmen Miranda.

“Without doubt, her Brazilian dance show is one that will be appreciated by all.”

- Dionne Warwick

In a city teeming with Latin music and rhythm, Callil has consistently been Los Angeles’ most visible and appealing Brazilian performer. Her widely praised performances in New York, Chicago, Detroit, and a series of shows for Aretha Franklin in Miami have established her, with considerable justification, as the voice and heart of Brazil in America.

Callil’s dark, sensuous sound, her smoothly rhythmic interpretations, passionate modern interpretation of Samba - the national dance of Brazil - are filled with the energy, the life and the color of Brazil.

With love,

Christiane
